Our History:

That tradition began in 1920, when Linda’s grandparents, Milton and Minnie Hedeen, purchased lakefront property along Green Bay with a vision of creating a seasonal resort. Just outside the village of Sister Bay, they welcomed summer visitors seeking relief in “naturally air-conditioned Door County.”By 1922, they began hosting their first guests—establishing a legacy of hospitality that continues today.

Milton and Minnie Hedeen (Linda’s grandparents) – first generation resort operators.

Milton and Minnie operated the resort until 1968, when Linda’s parents, Alvin and Betty Hedeen, took over. Both men were also skilled builders, and their work can still be seen throughout Northern Door County today.

During this time, Alvin and Betty purchased 40 acres just outside Sister Bay—land that now includes Dovetail Acres Campground. While initially planned for development, part of the property was sold in 1985 to establish the Northern Door Farmers Cooperative.

In 1987, the third generation continued the tradition as Linda’s brother, Rodney, took over the resort until his retirement in 2008. Today, several of the original cottages remain in the family and have been thoughtfully updated.

In 1988, current owners (Terry Wurster and Linda Hedeen Wurster) built their first log house on 3.5 acres of land. In 1996, Terry and Linda purchased the remaining acreage and immediately built a second log home to use as a summer rental. The log house in the picture above is available for rent on VRBO.

In 2012, during the midst of a recession, the former Farmers Cooperative store went out of business and was up for sale at auction. Despite having no background, Terry and Linda purchased the gas station, car wash, and convenience store and worked to make the “Dovetail Trading” business viable, with the idea of eventually starting a campground.

Dovetail Acres Campground

On the surrounding land, Terry and Linda decided to apply to build a campground in the fall of 2019, completing a circle that involves carrying on our family’s century-old tradition of serving Door County visitors. Along with our son, Daniel (fourth generation), we can’t wait to continue the family tradition of making Sister Bay a second home and start welcoming guests to Dovetail Acres Campground.
